University of GeorgiaThe University of Georgia is a large public research university located in Athens, Georgia, and is known to be one of the oldest public universities in the United States. The University is organized into eighteen schools and colleges, offering 140 different degree programs in a wide array of disciplines, which puts it to the list of "Top 10 Public Ivy League Schools." This institution has a long history, originating back in the 18th century.
The University of Georgia offers a number of student services including non-remedial tutoring, day care, health insurance and health service. It leads students to commit to excellence and outstanding academic achievements. It's dedicated to serve a diverse and well-prepared student body, to promote high levels of student achievement, and to provide appropriate academic support services.
It offers baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees. The fields of study which the University offers range from the arts and social sciences, to law, agriculture and medicine. Many national and international students as well as students from within the state of Georgia apply for studies, as it attracts students from all around the globe.
The Greek Life Office is incorporated in the university, which provides the fraternities and sororities with educational programs and services to augment and promote a learning community. The Greek System of the University strives to attain the highest level of academic achievement possible. It is a driving force in helping members live up to their potential. These programs are largely successful.
The University has 3 additional programs for achieving students: the Honors Program, a Study Abroad Program, and a First Year Odyssey.
The Honors program offers not only extracurricular activities, but also go beyond campus. Every year, the Honor students are placed in epicenters, such as the studios of VOA, the halls of the Greater New York Hospital Association, and much more. The Honors International Scholars Program provides support for students to study, work, and serve abroad, with no area of the world off limits. Honors International Scholars have received support to travel to all seven continents.
The Office of International Education supports the University of Georgia's academic, research, and outreach missions and strategic directions through the promotion of global learning experiences for our students, the sponsorship and support of international students, scholars, faculty and staff, and the development of international research and instructional partnerships and collaborations.
The First-Year Odyssey seminars are designed to introduce the students to the academic life of the University. These seminars will allow them to engage with faculty and other first-year students in a small class environment to learn about the unique academic culture the University offers.
For travelling around campus, UGA has its own transport system. The Campus Transit System is a unit of the Auxiliary Services Department providing transportation services throughout the University campus. Bus and disabled transportation services are provided on a no-fare basis. Regular route services provided by Campus Transit are available to all.
Campus and Community Resources
The UGA Library is the largest university library in the State of Georgia. It is a member of the prestigious Association of Research Libraries consisting of the largest research libraries in North America and ranks in the top third of these libraries. The Libraries contain more than 4.5 million books, serials and documents, and many other items, including manuscripts, photographs, drawings, and newspapers. The map collection incorporates over 611,828 items and the microform collection numbers more than 6.5 million. The collections support the curricular and research needs of the campus and are available to library users both on the campus and across the state.
The Georgia Museum of Natural History contains the most extensive collection of Georgia natural history artifacts and specimens and is one of the largest natural history museums in the Southeast. The Museum's collections are crucial to quality education in over 50 specialized graduate and undergraduate courses in the natural sciences at the University.
The Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities encompasses 430,000 square feet and includes five gymnasia, three swimming pools, three multi-purpose rooms, a climbing wall, ten racquetball courts, two international squash courts, strength and conditioning rooms, an 1/8-mile track, an outdoor equipment rental room, and an outdoor resource center.
